An All-Metal Canister With Nothing to Wear Out

This little canister is about as materially simple as storage gets.

The AUNMAS tea tin is built entirely from stainless steel, body and both lids, with a double-lid design and no gasket, no silicone, and no plastic anywhere. For a microplastic-free kitchen that is worth noting, because most "airtight" canisters rely on a silicone or plastic seal, and this one does not: an inner lid presses down over the contents and an outer lid caps it, so the seal is metal on metal. Nothing can leach, shed, or perish, and there is no gasket to replace down the line. It holds 550 milliliters, around 18 ounces, which suits a batch of loose-leaf tea, coffee, sugar, matcha, or a favorite spice.

The brushed stainless looks clean on a counter or shelf, it is rust-resistant and easy to wipe out, and the double lid does a genuinely good job of keeping air and moisture away from tea and coffee so they hold their aroma. As a reusable metal alternative to plastic tea tubs and bags, it is a tidy, durable little upgrade.

It scores high for material purity: it is all stainless steel with no gasket, silicone, or plastic anywhere, so nothing touches your tea or coffee but inert metal, and there is nothing to perish or replace. It sits just below the top of our scale for honest, practical reasons rather than material ones: the metal double-lid seal keeps dry goods fresh but is not liquid-tight or vacuum-airtight, it is not see-through, and it is a single modest-sized canister. For the cleanest possible dry-goods storage of tea, coffee, and spices, it is an excellent choice.

The Honest Tradeoffs

1. The double-lid metal seal is the thing to understand. 

2. It keeps dry goods fresh and is great for tea, coffee, and spices, but it is a press-fit metal seal rather than a clamped, gasketed one, so it is not liquid-tight or vacuum-airtight the way a silicone-sealed jar is. 

3. Treat it as a dry-goods canister, not a container for anything wet. 

4. Because it is solid steel, it is also not see-through, so you cannot see how much is left without opening it, and at 550 milliliters it is a single modest canister rather than a bulk container. 

5. None of this is a flaw, it is simply the nature of an all-metal, gasket-free tin, and the upside is there is genuinely nothing in it to wear out or replace.

How We Evaluate Food Storage

We look at four things, and none is a lab score:

1. Whether the food-contact surface is inert and won't leach

2. Stain, or hold odors, what the lid is actually made of, since that is where plastic hides in most "glass" storage

3. How well it seals and holds up across the fridge, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher, 

4. And how durable it is over years of use. 

The real shift in food storage is getting your food off plastic and onto glass or steel.
