The Giara is the full-size version of the swing-top bottle, a tall, round, 1-liter glass bottle from Bormioli Rocco that holds 33.75 ounces and stands a striking 12 inches tall.

It scores high for a genuinely plastic-free, airtight seal, glass bottle, metal clamp, and natural rubber gasket, in a made-in-Italy liter bottle that gets drinks, ferments, and oils out of plastic, in a practical six-pack. It sits just below the all-glass options on our material-purity scale because the rubber gasket is a consumable that needs hand washing and periodic replacement, the normal upkeep of any swing-top bottle. For plastic-free storing and serving of larger liquid batches, it is an excellent choice.

The Honest Tradeoffs

1. The natural rubber gasket is the consumable that keeps the seal plastic-free, and like any gasket it softens over time and is eventually replaced. 

2. Bormioli Rocco advises hand washing the metal ring and gasket without cleanser while the glass bottle goes in the dishwasher, keeping the gasket away from 100% fatty substances, and not filling to the very brim so the seal works properly. 

3. These are also tall, fairly slim bottles, beautiful but breakable, so they want a stable spot. 

4. And they are built for liquids rather than dry goods or thick contents that will not pour through the neck. 

5. None of this is a drawback so much as how a tall swing-top bottle works.

2. Stain, or hold odors, what the lid is actually made of, since that is where plastic hides in most "glass" storage

3. How well it seals and holds up across the fridge, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher, 

4. And how durable it is over years of use.
