It scores at the top of our range because, on materials, it is the cleanest lid solution we have found: 316 surgical stainless steel and a 100% food-grade silicone gasket, with no plastisol coating or plastic anywhere, reusable for life, and a direct fix for the plastic-lined disposable lids that come standard on mason jars. It falls just short of perfect for honest, practical reasons rather than material ones: it is for storage rather than canning, it fits regular-mouth jars only, the silicone gasket needs correct seating and occasional replacement, and it is lids-only at a premium up-front price. For upgrading regular-mouth mason jars you already own, it is an excellent choice.

The Honest Tradeoffs

The most important honest point: these are storage lids, not canning lids.

1. They are excellent for dry goods, liquids, fermenting, and everyday fridge and pantry storage, but they are not designed for water-bath or pressure canning, where you still need traditional disposable canning lids that are engineered to vacuum-seal during processing. 

2. They are also regular mouth, so they fit standard regular-mouth jars rather than the wide-mouth jars, worth checking your jars before buying, since regular and wide are not interchangeable. 

3. The silicone gasket is the one non-metal part, it is removable for cleaning, food-grade, and replaceable down the line, and it should be seated correctly each time for the leak-proof seal to work. 

4. They are lids only, so you supply the jars. And they cost more up front than a sleeve of disposable lids, though being reusable for life, the cost per use drops to almost nothing. 

5. None of this is a drawback for everyday storage, it is simply the line between storage and canning.

How We Evaluate Food Storage

We look at four things, and none is a lab score:

1. Whether the food-contact surface is inert and won't leach

2. Stain, or hold odors, what the lid is actually made of, since that is where plastic hides in most "glass" storage

3. How well it seals and holds up across the fridge, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher, 

4. And how durable it is over years of use.
