Plastic-Free Curl Conditioner Bar, Vegan & Silicone-Free – Ethique
Plastic-Free Curl Conditioner Bar, Vegan & Silicone-Free – Ethique
A Conditioner With No Bottle
A liquid conditioner is mostly water in a plastic bottle.
Ethique's curl conditioner bar strips that away: it is a solid, concentrated bar in plastic-free, compostable packaging, and a single bar does the work of multiple bottles, which is about as on-mission as hair care gets for keeping plastic out of the house. It is built for curls, using shea butter, cocoa butter, and castor oil to give the slip and moisture that let you detangle and define without a fight. It is vegan, cruelty-free, sulfate-free, and silicone-free, so it fits a Curly Girl approach, and you simply glide the wet bar over mid-lengths and ends, then rinse.
The Honest Note on Scent
Here is the honest catch.
1. This bar is not fragrance-free. Its label lists "Fragrance (Parfum)," which Ethique notes is a natural fragrance, along with lemongrass oil and the declared allergens that come with it, citral, geraniol, and linalool. Natural fragrance is still fragrance, so a "tropical lemongrass and coconut" scented bar is not an unscented one, and anyone sensitive to fragrance should pass.
2. A couple of smaller notes: conditioner bars have a short learning curve compared to a pump of cream, and the bar uses mineral colorants (mica, titanium dioxide, a chromium green) for its look.
3. One clarification, the conditioning agent behentrimonium methosulfate is mild and, despite the name, is not a sulfate.
True Shift Score: 8.0 / 10
This is our own assessment, not a lab result or a certification.
It scores well for a genuinely differentiated reason: it is a plastic-free, zero-waste, compostable conditioner bar that replaces bottles, vegan and cruelty-free, sulfate-free and silicone-free, with a shea-and-cocoa-butter base that genuinely defines curls. It sits in the 8s rather than higher because it is not fragrance-free, carrying a natural fragrance and lemongrass oil with declared allergens that the "natural" wording can obscure, and because a bar takes a little practice and uses mineral colorants. For a plastic-free curl conditioner, it is an excellent choice.
Building the Routine
- Pair it with a plastic-free shampoo bar such as Ethique "Professor Curl" for a fully bottle-free routine.
- If you would rather have a rich liquid cream for very thick or thirsty hair, the silicone-free Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner is that.

How We Evaluate Hair & Oral Care
We read the ingredient list rather than the claims on the front of the pack.
1. For hair, we favor gentle, sulfate-free cleansing and steer away from synthetic fragrance and harsh detergents, and we give real weight to formats and refills that cut plastic.
2. We separate what is independently certified from what a brand simply states, and we tell you which it is.
3. And we are honest about tradeoffs, from a soap bar's higher pH to whether a "natural" scent is still fragrance.
4. The shift here is choosing transparency and durable, low-waste choices over marketing.

Common Questions About the Ethique Curl Conditioner Bar
Is this conditioner bar fragrance-free?
No. It is scented with a natural fragrance and lemongrass oil, and it lists the declared allergens citral, geraniol, and linalool. "Natural fragrance" is still fragrance, so if you need no scent at all, choose a fragrance-free conditioner instead.
How is a conditioner bar better for the environment?
A liquid conditioner is mostly water shipped in a plastic bottle. This bar removes both: it is concentrated, comes in plastic-free compostable packaging, and one bar replaces several bottles, cutting plastic and shipping weight at the same time.
Is there a learning curve to using it?
A little. You glide the wet bar over mid-lengths and ends rather than squeezing out a cream, and it takes a couple of washes to find the right amount for your hair. Keeping the bar dry with airflow between uses helps it last.
