It sits just shy of the top for honest, practical reasons rather than material ones: there is no lid to keep cubes from picking up freezer odors, the lever release takes a firm hand, and a few units have shipped with rough edges. For plastic-free ice, it is an excellent choice.

The Honest Tradeoffs

A few honest notes.

1. It does not come with a lid, so in a busy freezer the exposed cubes can pick up odors from strong-smelling food nearby, storing finished cubes in a closed stainless or glass container solves that. 

2. The lever takes a deliberate, firm pull, and cubes release best after a minute at room temperature or a brief twist, this is a mechanical metal tray, not a soft silicone pop-out. 

3. Metal also conducts cold, so the tray is genuinely cold to handle straight from the freezer. 

4. And as with any stamped-metal product, it is worth a quick look on arrival, since a small number of buyers have reported rough edges. 

5. None of this outweighs the core win: ice with no plastic in it.

How We Evaluate Food Storage

1. Whether the food-contact surface is inert and won't leach

2. Stain, or hold odors, what the lid is actually made of, since that is where plastic hides in most "glass" storage

3. How well it seals and holds up across the fridge, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher, 

4. And how durable it is over years of use. 

The real shift in food storage is getting your food off plastic and onto glass or steel.
