Indoor Air, Honestly Assessed

How We Evaluate Air Purifiers
Every product here is assessed the same way, and the score we give is our own editorial judgment, not a lab result or a certification. We weigh the things a healthy home actually depends on:
1. Filtration for the job.
Enough HEPA for particles, and, just as important, enough carbon mass and the right type of carbon for gases and VOCs. Carbon is what adsorbs chemical odors, so a unit with a heavy carbon bed handles VOCs far better than one with a thin carbon pre-filter.
2. Build and materials.
Whether the cabinet is steel or plastic, and whether the unit itself off-gasses, which matters most to chemically sensitive buyers. We say plainly where a unit is plastic-bodied rather than implying everything here is steel.
3. Filter longevity and waste.
How long the filters last and how many cartridges that keeps out of the landfill over the years.

How do I choose an air purifier for VOCs and chemical odors?
Look at the carbon, not just the HEPA. HEPA captures particles like dust, pollen, and dander, but gases and VOCs are adsorbed onto activated carbon, so the amount and type of carbon is what matters for chemical odors. Do air purifiers remove microplastics?
A true HEPA filter captures 99.97 percent of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns, which includes many airborne microplastic fragments, though not the very smallest, which fall below that size. So a good purifier reduces airborne microplastic exposure rather than eliminating it entirely.
How often do filters need changing?
It depends on the unit. Many purifiers need their main filter replaced every six to twelve months, while Austin Air filters are rated for up to five years under normal residential use, closer to two or three years under heavy or continuous chemical load. Are these energy-efficient?

Do air purifiers help with allergies?

What about ozone?

Can an air purifier remove PFAS?
PFAS exposure happens mainly through water and household dust rather than through the air, so an air purifier is not the primary tool for it. For PFAS, water filtration is the place to start.
