Ball's 8-ounce quilted crystal jelly jars come twelve to a tray, made in the USA from BPA-free glass, and their small half-pint size makes them the right answer for jams, jellies, relishes, sauces, and mustards, but also for everything that has no business living in a plastic tub: spices, herbs, nuts, homemade baby food, overnight oats, salad dressing, or a week of prepped snacks. Because they are straight-sided with no shoulders, they fill and empty easily, they are simple to clean, and they freeze well.

The quilted crystal pattern is not just decoration. The Honest Tradeoffs

The same honest note applies here as to every standard mason jar:

1. The glass is excellent, but the lid is the weak point. 

2. The flat lid seals with a BPA-free sealing compound, which is a thin plastic layer, so plastic is the sealing surface even though your food sits on inert glass. 

3. That compound wears with repeated tight sealing, and the tinplate lids and bands can rust over time, especially if they go through the dishwasher. 

4. It is BPA-free and it is the standard the entire canning world runs on, but in a collection built on getting food off plastic, it is a real deduction rather than something we will wave away.

6. One practical note if you freeze in them: leave headspace, since liquids expand, and cool the contents before they go in.

It sits where the rest of the Ball family sits, and no higher, for one reason we will not soften: the flat lid seals with a BPA-free plastic compound, so plastic is the sealing surface, and that compound wears while the lids and bands can rust. That is not a limit inherent to the format, it is a fault with an available fix, and in this case an unusually clean one: these are regular-mouth jars, so a set of 316 stainless lids removes the plastic from the seal entirely. Buy the jars, then fix the lids, and you have something excellent.
