A Rinse Drawn From the Sea

Olas takes a different route to a clean mouth than most rinses, and it is the most distinctive formula in our oral aisle.

Instead of leaning on a single active, it is built around a marine-botanical complex: blue-green algae and seaweed extract that carry naturally occurring minerals like calcium and magnesium, sea salt to gently shift your mouth's pH so it is less hospitable to harmful bacteria, a broad blend of organic essential oils, and CoQ10 as an antioxidant. It is dentist-formulated, alcohol-free so it does not sting or dry out your mouth, and free of fluoride, SLS, artificial colors, fragrances, and parabens. Where our other rinses are about remineralizing or pH-balancing, this one leans toward gum comfort and an antioxidant, botanical clean, an "oral beauty" angle, with a sweet mint flavor carrying herbal notes of thyme, chamomile, and cypress.

Two nice formulation details for a clean rinse: it is sweetened with xylitol rather than anything artificial, and it uses a mild, plant-derived solubilizer to blend its oils, rather than the PEG-type synthetic some rinses rely on.

The Honest Notes

The most important honest note is about scent, and it is the reason this rinse is not for everyone.

1. Olas has by far the longest and most aromatic essential-oil blend of any mouthwash we carry, tea tree, rosemary, myrrh, grapefruit, thyme, cypress, frankincense, orange, lemon, and more, so it is a genuinely herbal, potent-tasting rinse, and it is emphatically not fragrance-free. 

2. If you love a complex botanical flavor, that is the appeal; if you are sensitive to fragrance or essential oils, or you want something plain, this is the wrong pick and our shorter-list rinses will suit you better. 

3. A few more honest points: like our other rinses it is fluoride-free, so the same even-handed note applies, and it does not actively remineralize the way a hydroxyapatite rinse does. 

4. The "marine collagen" and "oral beauty" language is the brand's framing; we credit the genuine minerals and antioxidants in it without leaning on those marketing terms. 

5. And because it is so essential-oil rich, it is an adult rinse, keep it away from young children, and if you are pregnant or nursing, check with your provider before using a heavily botanical oral product.

It scores well as a genuinely clean, distinctive rinse: alcohol-free, fluoride-free, SLS-free, free of artificial colors and fragrances and parabens, dentist-formulated, sweetened with xylitol, and built on an unusual marine-and-botanical complex with real minerals and antioxidants, using a plant-derived solubilizer rather than a synthetic one. It sits in the low-to-mid 8s for honest reasons rather than faults: its very large essential-oil blend makes it the most aromatic rinse we carry and unsuitable for anyone fragrance-sensitive, and it does not remineralize the way a hydroxyapatite rinse does. For a clean, botanical, alcohol-free rinse with a distinctive character, it is an excellent choice.
