Floss You Can Compost, in a Container You Keep Forever

Conventional dental floss is quietly one of the worst offenders in the bathroom: it is nylon or Teflon-coated thread, a single-use plastic that never breaks down, often coated with PFAS "forever chemicals" for glide, spooled in a throwaway plastic case.

This is the opposite on every count. The floss itself is bamboo charcoal fiber coated with natural candelilla wax and a touch of peppermint oil, it is PFAS-free, and it is vegan, unlike silk floss, which relies on an animal fiber. Best of all, it comes in a refillable, reusable stainless steel container with a built-in cutter: you buy the container once and refill it for life, so the only thing you ever replace is a compostable spool of floss in plastic-free kraft packaging. The Honest Notes

Three honest points.

1. First, on biodegradability: the maker states the floss breaks down in roughly sixty to ninety days, which points to genuine plant fiber rather than the charcoal-coated nylon some "eco" flosses secretly use. We credit that, but it is a maker's statement rather than an independent certification, so we pass it along as their claim. 

2. Second, a practical one: bamboo-fiber floss behaves a little differently from slick nylon. Most people find it comfortable and effective, but it can be slightly more prone to shredding or catching on tight contacts or rough fillings than a waxed nylon floss, so if you have very tight teeth it may take a little getting used to. 

3. Third, it carries a light peppermint scent from the essential oil, so it is not fragrance-free, though the amount is small.

It scores well because it fixes several real problems with conventional floss at once: it replaces single-use plastic thread with compostable bamboo fiber, it is PFAS-free and vegan, and above all it comes in a refillable stainless steel container you keep for life, so the recurring waste is just a plastic-free refill. It sits in the low-to-mid 8s for honest reasons rather than faults: its biodegradability is maker-stated rather than independently certified, and bamboo fiber can shred or catch a little more than slick nylon on very tight teeth. For a low-waste, plastic-free floss, it is an excellent choice.

Floss first, then rinse, then brush.
